In preparation for Ramadan, the Islamic Resource Center and Muslim Women’s Coalition have thoughtfully planned multiple activities for community engagement and increased their inventory of Ramadan-related books and gifts.
The Islamic Resource Center (IRC) is a rich community asset and vibrant hub of activity year-round. But during the holy month of Ramadan—like a fanoos (traditional Arabic lantern)—it shines a special, welcoming light on unity, learning, reflection, and inclusivity.
Operated by the Muslim Women’s Coalition, the IRC, located at 5235 S. 27th Street in Greenfield, is the largest Islamic lending library in the state. Among its nearly 4,000 items is an exceptional variety of books related to Ramadan.
The IRC library collection includes books for children of all ages, from babies to teens, as well as a selection of books for adults, including one or two that may be ideal for people who are new to Islam or those outside the faith who are curious about the teachings of Islam.
A Place for Exploration and Learning
In the spirit of Ramadan, the IRC has designed a series of activities aimed at fostering community engagement and understanding. Families are invited to participate in workshops, discussions, and storytelling sessions that revolve around the principles of Ramadan: compassion, generosity, and renewal. These activities are not solely for Muslims but are open to everyone, creating an atmosphere of learning and dialogue.
The organized events are crafted to allow participants to delve into the significance of Ramadan, with children’s programs spotlighting tales of historical figures in Islam, core values nurtured during the month, and hands-on activities that highlight traditions such as shared meals and acts of kindness. This not only brings the community together but also encourages a greater understanding and respect for diverse cultures and beliefs.
A Resource for All Ages
At the heart of the IRC’s mission is its library, which functions as a vital educational resource. With its extensive collection of books, the IRC serves as a sanctuary where young readers can find stories that reflect their own experiences. The collection includes beautifully illustrated children’s books, engaging early reader texts, and thoughtful works for older youth and adults.
In an age where representation matters immensely, the IRC fulfills an essential need for children to see themselves in the literature they read. As Janan Najeeb, founder and executive director of the Muslim Women’s Coalition, emphasizes, providing “mirrors” for children is crucial for their self-identity and growth. The library’s selection helps children understand their place in the world while informing others about their culture and faith.
Strengthening Community Bonds
By integrating the community’s voice into its activities, the IRC not only promotes education but also cultivates stronger bonds among its members. The atmosphere during Ramadan is especially impactful, as it encourages reflection and the sharing of personal stories. This unique communal experience fosters understanding and solidarity during a time of spiritual growth.
Moreover, the IRC plays a pivotal role in community outreach, continuously seeking to break down barriers and misconceptions about Islam. Through open dialogues and interactive sessions, the Center provides a platform for educators, community leaders, and families to participate in meaningful conversations about faith, cultural diversity, and mutual respect.
Embracing Ramadan Traditions
In celebration of Ramadan, the IRC has expanded its inventory to include not only books but also gifts that resonate with the spirit of the month. This includes items such as decorative lanterns, prayer mats, and traditional sweets. These pieces help to enrich the Ramadan experience by allowing individuals and families to embrace their traditions at home.
As Ramadan approaches, the activities and offerings at the IRC become a central point for members of the community to gather, share, and celebrate. This nurturing environment encourages everyone to contribute their own experiences and traditions, ultimately enriching the experience for all.
