A Collective Effort: Community Volunteers Step Up to Provide Shelter in North Texas
As frigid winds swept across North Texas, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland, a community united in compassion and action. Just hours before temperatures plunged below freezing, an inspiring coalition of volunteers from Muslim, Presbyterian, and Catholic congregations gathered at the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) to create a sanctuary for their unhoused neighbors.
Transforming Spaces
The gymnasium of EPIC transformed into a bustling warm haven as volunteers worked tirelessly. Early afternoon saw the floor of the basketball court covered with plastic tarps, a protective layer against the cold ground. Nearly 160 metal cots were set up meticulously, while donations of clothes were folded with care. Tables and chairs were positioned, and bedding along with plastic cutlery were laid out in preparation for the evening’s dinner. By 6:30 PM, the center was ready to welcome guests seeking warmth and shelter.
The Role of EPIC
This effort marks the eighth year of the Plano Overnight Warming Station initiative, a testament to community resilience. The warming station stands as the only overnight shelter for those experiencing homelessness in Plano. Its significance extends beyond city lines, as neighboring Allen, devoid of its own overnight shelter, directs homeless individuals to EPIC as their safe retreat.
Responding to Adverse Weather
The shelter opens its doors whenever there’s a forecast for freezing overnight temperatures or when conditions suggest a chill below 40 degrees accompanied by significant rain. As the region braced for over 80 hours of freezing temperatures combined with sleet and snow, seven volunteer teams from EPIC, alongside various local churches—including the First Baptist Church of Plano and Custer Road United Methodist Church—worked in shifts to keep the shelter operational around the clock.
Volunteers’ Dedication
Denny Beran, a stalwart volunteer from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, reflected on his experiences, calling the initiative a “labor of love.” He emphasized the stark reality faced by many in the community: “Do we ever have to worry about where we’re going to lay our heads at night? Most people in Plano don’t have that challenge. These people do.” His commitment to the project highlights a sense of duty that resonates deeply within the volunteers.
A Well-Equipped Shelter
In 2022, the shelter moved from the Salvation Army to the spacious gymnasium at EPIC, which accommodates up to 225 individuals. To facilitate access, EPIC provides a bus service from the Parker Road DART station, along with a shower trailer stationed outside. Safety and health services are prioritized, with two police officers and two paramedics present overnight to assist volunteers and guests alike.
The city of Plano allocates approximately $30,000 annually to support the shelter, aiding in the reimbursement for food and supplies. Yet, the dedicated congregations contribute an additional $20,000 each year, underscoring the collaborative spirit and commitment to their vulnerable neighbors.
Lessons from the Past
Sameer Siddiqui, president of EPIC’s board, shared that the mosque found a renewed sense of purpose to host the warming shelter following the devastating winter storm of 2021. That year, they set up a hotline to assist those in need, receiving hundreds of calls for food, water, and urgent supplies. “You just name it, we were there,” he recalled, highlighting how the community rose to the challenge during an emergency.
Personal Stories of Resilience
Among those finding refuge at the EPIC shelter was Muhammad El-Qasem, who had been experiencing homelessness for about a month after his release from jail. Battling the relentless rain and plummeting temperatures, he expressed gratitude for the shelter’s warmth: “Whether you’re in the Islamic community or the Christian community… they’ve all come together over the suffering of others.” His words encapsulate the profound sense of unity that transcends spiritual beliefs.
Continuous Support
As the community faced adversities brought on by the winter chill, the commitment shown by volunteers not only provided shelter but also fostered connections among diverse groups. The Plano Overnight Warming Station illustrates how collective efforts can bring hope, safety, and a sense of belonging, emphasizing that during the coldest nights, warmth can be found in human kindness.
