(NEW YORK, NY, 3/24/26) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) has recently called for public assistance following a distressing incident involving a young woman on a subway platform. This incident not only highlights the ongoing challenges related to hate crimes but also the pressing need for community awareness and support.
On March 17, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly attacked at the 9th Avenue subway station in Brooklyn. Reports indicate that the assailant approached her, uttering Islamophobic remarks before physically assaulting her. He reportedly threw her to the ground, illustrating the dangers posed by unchecked hate and prejudice. Additionally, the perpetrator is said to have destroyed the victim’s phone during the confrontation. This horrifying incident is currently under investigation by the NYPD’s hate crime unit, emphasizing the seriousness with which law enforcement views such acts.
In response to this incident, CAIR-NY’s Executive Director, Afaf Nasher, Esq., released a compelling statement emphasizing the severity of anti-Muslim bigotry. Nasher articulated, “This alleged anti-Muslim attack is a reminder of the real dangers that bigotry poses to the safety of New Yorkers. No one should fear being targeted because of their faith or perceived identity.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding that hate crimes do not only affect the immediate victims; they instill fear within entire communities.
CAIR-NY is actively urging anyone with information related to the incident to step forward. The organization insists that collective action is necessary to hold perpetrators accountable and combat hate in all its forms. Nasher further stressed, “Acts of hate have no place in our city, and we must stand together to ensure justice for the victim and to help prevent future attacks.” This call to action reinforces the idea that community involvement is crucial in combating intolerance.
Additionally, CAIR-NY is not alone in its fight against hate. Earlier in the month, they banded together with local community members to advocate for increased protection following a horrifying incident in Buffalo. An elderly Bengali woman, Bilkis Begum, was allegedly pistol-whipped during a robbery while on her way to her mosque for early morning prayers. Such incidents illustrate a troubling trend of violence directed at vulnerable communities, which necessitates a collective response from organizations and individuals alike.
In a broader context, CAIR released its 2026 Civil Rights Report titled “The Right to be Different,” which documents a troubling escalation in complaints associated with civil rights violations, particularly affecting Muslim communities. In 2025, the organization received a staggering 8,683 complaints nationwide—the highest number recorded in a single year since its foundational civil rights report in 1996. This statistic is alarming and underscores the urgent need for societal change.
