Abbott Calls for Cy-Fair ISD to Sever Ties with 2026 Houston Islamic Games; District Responds Firmly

Controversy Surrounding the 2026 Houston Islamic Games

Governor Greg Abbott’s recent demands regarding the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) have sparked significant debate. On January 21, Abbott urged the district to terminate any negotiations and agreements related to the upcoming 2026 Houston Islamic Games, expressing concerns over alleged connections to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) New Jersey chapter, which he has branded a foreign terrorist organization under state law.

Governor’s Stance

In his letter to CFISD Board President Julie Hinaman and Superintendent Douglas Killian, Abbott emphasized that allowing public school facilities to host events linked to CAIR NJ would constitute a violation of state law and could jeopardize the safety of students. He required the district to preserve all records related to the event and mandated confirmation of the termination of any negotiations within seven days, warning of potential investigations by the Texas Education Agency and possible legal consequences from Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Abbott’s earlier proclamation in November 2025 listed both the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations, citing claims that CAIR acts as a front for Hamas—accusations that CAIR has consistently refuted. “Radical Islamic extremism is not welcome in Texas and certainly not in our schools,” Abbott stated, asserting that taxpayer-funded facilities should not support events sanctioned by designated terrorist groups.

Response from CFISD

CFISD officials quickly responded to the governor’s letter, disputing his characterization of the district’s involvement in the Islamic Games. They noted that they had not received direct communication from Abbott and were only aware of the letter through an online press release. Importantly, the district clarified that it is not “hosting” the event and has no existing facility use agreements for the 2026-27 school year.

Under district policy GKD (LOCAL), CFISD allows community groups to rent school facilities for non-school activities as long as these uses do not interfere with district operations. During the past school year, CFISD reported nearly 13,000 hours of community facility use, engaging with various groups, including youth sports leagues and diverse religious organizations.

CFISD asserted that it had previously contracted with the Islamic Games of North America for a 2025 event, but claimed no agreements existed with CAIR NJ and that the district was unaware of any affiliation with CAIR during that rental period. They reiterated their adherence to state laws that prohibit governmental entities from contracting with entities deemed foreign terrorist organizations.

The Islamic Games and Mixed Messaging

Despite CFISD’s statement, the official website for the Islamic Games of North America lists events scheduled for September or October 2026 in Cypress, including an event map that designates Sprague Middle School as a location for the Houston-area games. This raises questions about the status of facility agreements—whether they are finalized or merely in the planning stages remains unclear.

As it stands, CFISD officials pointed out that no reservations for the 2026 Houston Islamic Games could be made until August 1, when the district would open reservations for the following school year. Meanwhile, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD has already canceled plans to host the Islamic Games, citing the governor’s designation and state law regarding CAIR’s alleged involvement.

Remarks from Event Organizers

Organizers of the Islamic Games have strongly refuted the claims regarding CAIR’s involvement. They stated that CAIR “has never been, and is not presently, a sponsor, partner, affiliate, or supporter” of the sports festival. Expressing concern that a children’s sporting event is being targeted, Salaudeen Nausrudeen, president of the Islamic Games, expressed hope that “better minds prevail.”

As the situation unfolds, the implications of the governor’s demands on community events, relationships among Texas school districts, and the discourse surrounding inclusivity and safety will likely continue to evolve.
