Nestled within the unassuming streets of Strašnice, a small district in Prague, lies the Süleymaniye Mosque. On the outside, it appears to blend seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood, characterized by calm and modest apartment blocks. Yet, this modest construction houses a vibrant community waiting to be discovered.
A Steady Presence in the Community
Founded over 30 years ago by a group of Turkish immigrants—many originally hailing from Germany—the Süleymaniye Mosque has managed to flourish within a predominantly atheistic society. While the Muslim population in Czechia is relatively small, with estimates ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 individuals amidst a total populace of nearly 11 million, the mosque provides crucial spiritual services and fosters a sense of belonging for its congregants.
A Welcoming Atmosphere
“Our door is open to everyone,” said Mustafa Hoca, the mosque’s head imam, as he emphasized the inclusive spirit of their community. Upon my arrival, I was greeted warmly by Ali Kamil, a müderris who serves as both teacher and administrator. Despite not having made prior arrangements for my visit, I was welcomed with open arms, highlighting the mosque’s commitment to accessibility and community engagement.
Multifaceted Functions
The Süleymaniye Mosque serves more than just a religious haven. It is an educational center, a place for community meals, and even accommodation for those in need. True to Islamic customs, the mosque maintains separate areas and activities for men and women, allowing for a traditional yet adaptive approach to worship and education.
During special occasions like Ramadan, iftar meals are held every evening and are open to everyone, regardless of their fasting status or religious background. “We don’t ask if they are Muslims,” Hoca explained with a smile, noting that university students often join these gatherings simply for the shared meals. This approach has endeared the mosque to the larger community, earning it the colloquial title of the “Turkish mosque.”
A Gateway for International Visitors
Interestingly, the mosque’s reputation extends beyond local borders. Hoca recounted an incident when an Indonesian tourist group contacted him via WhatsApp, requesting to hold Friday prayers at the mosque during their travels. Such instances illustrate the mosque’s role as a welcoming sanctuary that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries.
Integration and Community Relations
Despite its low-key appearance, the Süleymaniye Mosque has made significant strides in fostering dense community relations. Hoca pointed out their proactive approach to communication, which includes notifying neighbors of potential disturbances due to construction work. “We try our best to be as integrated with the community as possible,” he said, underlining the mosque’s commitment to being a good neighbor in a largely non-religious city.
An Atmosphere of Tolerance
Concerns regarding Islamophobia understandably arise in the context of a religious minority within a predominantly secular society. However, Hoca confidently stated, “Not at all. We have fostered good neighborly relations and have not faced any Islamophobia.” This positive dynamic suggests that the mosque’s efforts at integration and openness have created a peaceful cohabitation with the surrounding community.
