Youth Uniting in Marrakech: A Commitment to Democracy and Peace
The picturesque city of Marrakech, renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture, served as a backdrop for an inspiring gathering this weekend. Young people from across the Islamic world converged in this Moroccan city for the closing events of Marrakech 2025, which has been designated the Capital of Youth of the Islamic World. Over four dynamic days, participants reaffirmed their commitment to democracy, peace, and security, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and international cooperation.
A Collaborative Effort
Organized in collaboration with Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF), the events highlighted the significance of youth engagement in today’s global landscape. Bringing together representatives from roughly 35 countries, along with policymakers, diplomats, and institutional leaders, the program facilitated in-depth discussions about the vital role that young people can play in shaping inclusive and stable societies.
Addressing Contemporary Challenges
Throughout the program, attendees passionately exchanged views on pressing issues such as democracy, peace, and security across Islamic, Arab, and African nations. Several sessions focused on harnessing youth participation in decision-making processes, underlining the collective responsibility of young people in promoting social cohesion and stability.
A session titled “The Role of Youth in Preventing Extremism and Promoting a Culture of Peace” stood out, emphasizing how civic engagement, dialogue, and education can empower youth to strengthen democratic institutions and enhance national security. Another noteworthy panel, “Youth Partnerships and Alliances for Sustainable Peace,” explored strategies for improving international cooperation and coordination between national and regional initiatives in these critical fields.
Embracing Digital Innovation
The importance of technology and social media emerged as a recurring theme throughout the event. Participants highlighted how digital platforms can facilitate cross-border partnerships and amplify the voices of youth. When used responsibly, technology can serve as a bridge for dialogue rather than a tool for division, fostering communication and understanding among diverse groups.
Voices of Solidarity
The program garnered attention from several senior officials, including ICYF President Taha Ayhan, Türkiye’s ambassador to Rabat, Mustafa Ilker Kılıç, and Yousef Aldobeay, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs. During his speech, Ayhan emphasized the significance of youth engagement but also acknowledged the ongoing plight of Palestinians. He stressed the need for international solidarity and the importance of keeping Palestinian youth issues at the forefront of global discussions.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Ayhan also noted that Marrakech marked the 11th edition of the OIC Youth Capital Program, joining an illustrious array of host cities that have contributed to the empowerment of Muslim youth. Each city brings its unique identity to the initiative, but they share a common goal: strengthening the role of young people in global progress.
The underlying message of unity and cooperation resonated throughout the discussions, with various speakers stressing the importance of intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding, and the establishment of long-term partnerships among emerging leaders.
